Photographing Rome Cavalieri Waldorf Astoria & La Pergola Restaurant

A Decade-Long Collaboration with Rome Cavalieri
Here I am once again at the Rome Cavalieri, Waldorf Astoria, a place that has truly become a second home. For more than ten years, I have been entrusted with producing many of the most important photoshoots for this iconic luxury hotel in Rome. Each return feels familiar, yet creatively stimulating, as the property continues to evolve while maintaining its timeless elegance.

La Pergola — A New Vision for a Three-Michelin-Starred Icon
The focus of this session was the complete revamp of La Pergola, Rome’s legendary three-Michelin-starred restaurant, entirely redesigned by the Jouin Manku Studio.
The new interiors combine refinement, contemporary elegance, and subtle theatricality, creating a dining environment worthy of one of Europe’s most celebrated culinary destinations.
Capturing this transformation required a careful balance between architectural precision and emotional storytelling.

Architectural & Interior Photography Approach
As is often the case with luxury hospitality projects, I was asked to photograph both architecture and lifestyle.
For the interior and architectural photography, I worked with a Cambo WRS paired with a Phase One IQ3 100MP, using primarily the restaurant’s lighting design enhanced by a controlled amount of natural light. The different color temperatures were carefully balanced in post-production to preserve the atmosphere envisioned by the designers.
This approach allowed the space to be represented with accuracy, depth, and visual harmony.

Portrait of Chef Heinz Beck
For the portrait of Chef Heinz Beck, I chose a more intimate and expressive lighting style.
The shoot was done using a Nikon D850 combined with a Profoto B1 and a single large Profoto umbrella, creating a subtle Caravaggio-inspired mood — dramatic yet refined, emphasizing character, craftsmanship, and presence.

Lifestyle Photography & Creative Team
The lifestyle photography was shot using Nikon cameras and Profoto B1 units in various lighting setups, designed to capture the rhythm, elegance, and human interaction within the restaurant environment.
This project was made possible thanks to a talented team:
